MY STORY
If you spend more than 15 minutes with me, you will see that I am bubbly and talkative. But honestly, I didn’t start my life that way. Growing up as the youngest of 5 and the youngest in my community I witnessed the unspeakable abuse of the women in my family as well as those that surrounded me. I saw and heard so many things that shook me to my core. Being the “baby” of the group the older girls and women would shield me from the abuse, but mentally and emotionally I still bore a burden.
I paid close attention to the behaviors that were punished, and I learned the hard lessons of what not to do. I learned to be quiet and make myself small. I learned not to speak up or advocate for the women or I would suffer consequences. I also learned not to trust people. I mean if people that loved you could be so mean then the rest of the world must be worse, right?
So, it totally makes sense that when I started school, I didn’t have any friends. I didn’t know how to talk to the kids, and I didn’t trust the adults. I also didn’t know how to ask for help in subjects where I struggled.
By the time I got to the 8 th grade I was a failing student. In fact, I ended up repeating the grade. In my mind I was a failure and I was doomed to stay stuck in Cameroon.
Things turned around for me when I got a new teacher who took the time to really teach me, support me, encourage me. In a matter of 3 months I went from being a failing student to an A student.
By age 19, I had a chance to come to the United States and pursue medicine. I graduated from college in just 2 short years and earned a 4-year scholarship to medical school.
