When Ayo goes to his first day of kindergarten, he meets a whole class of new friends. But he notices that no one else’s skin is dark brown, like his. Does that mean there is something wrong with the way he is? But when Ayo asks his mom about it, she assures him that no skin color is better or worse than any other. He learns that we all have different amounts of something called melanin inside of us, which is what makes our skin look different colors. That is the only difference. When Ayo goes back to school, he sees all the different colors of skin in his class now, and he realizes how every color is lucky and beautiful in its own way-including his!

..rivetting, touching, emotional and healing all at once. just right for our times. Ayo’s story is the story of millions of children struggling to fit in a world that questions their value without knowing the content of their character. Dr. Omerine captures that right approach to address this conundrum for children of all ages in all nations. A must read if you are that parent helping your child to navigate this journey called Life.

“Mommy, Ayo is just like me!” My 5 year old delighted in reading about Ayo’s experience in this thoughtfully-written and beautifully illustrated book! I love how it teaches about the skin and different skin tones – not just in simple ways that children can understand, but also at a deeper level with the educational insert that teaches about our skin! This is a must-have book for parents and kids, and especially when conversations about skin color arise.
